Athletic Background
A multi-sport star in high school, Cauley-Stein did not arrive at Kentucky with the same recruiting hype as many of his teammates, but he worked his way into consensus first-team All-American honors as a junior. Cauley-Stein joined Alex Poythress as the first scholarship recruits to sign with Kentucky since John Calipari was hired to stay in Lexington through their junior seasons. As a sophomore, Cauley-Stein totaled 106 blocks, second most in a single season by a UK player and earned SEC All-Defensive Team honors. Cauley-Stein's season was ended in the Sweet 16 due to a foot injury, and he announced his return for a junior season on April 14. As a junior he became the 25th consensus first-team All-American in program history and was named SEC Defensive Player of the Year. On April 9, 2015, he declared for the NBA draft.
