H.S. Athletic Background
A 2014 McDonald's All-American, Lyles joined Kentucky as a five-star recruit over offers from Louisville, Indiana and others. Lyles was named Indiana Mr. Basketball at the state's Gatorade Player of the ear after leading Arsenal Tech High School to the state championship as a senior. He averaged 23.7 points and 12.9 rebounds per game as a senior. A leg injury kept Lyles out of Kentucky's six-game summer exhibition series in the Bahamas, but he made his UK debut with back-to-back double-digit scoring efforts in his first two games. After a season-ending injury to Alex Poythress, Lyles slid into the Kentucky starting lineup 10 games into the 2014-15 season. UK head coach John Calipari frequently referred to Lyles' as Kentucky's x-factor during a 38-1 season, and Lyles made good on that praise by declaring for the NBA draft after one year in Lexington.
