Adam Finkelstein Director of Scouting

One of the very best scorers in the national class, Tre Johnson is a threat at different levels and just has a knack for putting the ball in the basket.

He’s most effective when he’s able to operate in space, whether that be in the open floor or attacking a close-out. He’s a dangerous shooter off the dribble and while he can make tough threes, his favorite spots are in the mid-range area. He can pull-up over top of contesting defenders, step-back to create some space, and even bring smaller defenders into the mid-post and operate with his back to the basket.

Johnson gets his easy points at the free-throw line, where he converted over 80% in the EYBL, and while he plays with an aggressive scoring mentality, he’s also evolving as a passer with 3.9 assists/game in the regular season.

While he prefers to play off a live dribble, and has a fluid handle, he doesn’t have a dynamic first-step. His game would be ideally suited to coming off screens away from the ball, but that is an area that he has yet to master or even really focus on yet.

While he’s not a totally explosive athlete, he has both positional size and length (+5 wingspan), with a frame that was previously lean, but now adding noticeably new muscle.

Johnson has shown he’s capable of being a good rebounding guard (5.6/game in the regular season), but needs to be a more committed defender.

Overall, he’s a potent scorer in the backcourt with size and length that translates, but he tends to rely on making tough shots. As he learns to become more efficient offensively, and competitive defensively, his game should continue to go to new levels.
